                                                          Lifeguard Appreciation Day

The principle role of a lifeguard is to maintain a safe aquatic environment for individuals in water based activities.  Lifeguards can be found on pool decks, beaches, waterfronts and in water parks.

                                                          Did you know…
                                                          • That lifeguards intervene in hundreds of water and land based emergencies in Newfoundland and Labrador swimming pools annually?
                                                          • That lifeguard undergo a minimum of 300 hours of training, costing approximately $1,500 to be certified?
                                                          • That lifeguards must recertify their training every two years to remain certified?
                                                          • That lifeguards must be 17 to lifeguard in Newfoundland and Labrador?
                                                          • That lifeguards must study pool chemistry, public relations, first aid and leadership in addition to practical rescue skills to become certified?
                                                          • That lifeguards have intervened in accident scenes outside pool environments and saved lives?
                                                          • That there are four separate specialist lifeguard courses offered by the Lifesaving Society in Canada?  Pool, Surf, Waterfront and Waterpark
                                                          • That over 60% of lifeguards in Newfoundland and Labrador are female?
                                                          • That the NLS award (National Lifeguard Service) has been the standard for lifeguarding in Canada since 1969 and is transferable to any province of Canada?

How can you become a lifeguard? If you have an interest in aquatics and love helping others, you’re a good candidate to become a lifeguard.   Lifeguarding starts with basic training at the Bronze Medallion level, then moves onto Bronze Cross and then into National Lifeguard Service and Standard First Aid.  You can even earn external credits towards your high school graduation by doing these courses!

Your local aquatic facility offers Lifesaving Society programs that can help you become a lifeguard.  We encourage you to join a class today and take the first step to gaining your certification.  Talk to a lifeguard, ask questions, tour a facility and see the lifeguards in action.
