                                                          Sledsmart DVD
The Newfoundland and Labrador  Lifesaving Society launched a revised DVD to make Canadians more aware of the dangers of snowmobiling on ice-covered bodies of water. The Society’s Sledsmart program was created in 1996 to address the problem of water-related snowmobile deaths in Newfoundland and Labrador. However, the problem reaches much further than the shores of this province.

For all Canadian water-related deaths and those related only to ice, about two-thirds of the victims were participating in recreational activities.  One recreational activity, snowmobiling, accounted for about half of all recreational ice-related deaths.  As might be expected, nearly all water-related snowmobiling deaths involved unsafe ice or open holes in the ice.

The DVD is produced in English and French, which are available on the same disc.  The Sledsmart module is 25 minutes long and the CAC module is nine minutes in length.

$19.95 - includes shipping and taxes

                                                          Sledsmart Facilitator Program

The Lifesaving Society's Sledsmart public education program helps educate snowmobilers about the dangers of crossing ice-covered bodies of water, hypothermia and provides general safety tips.

                                                          Who can deliver the program?
The Lifesaving Society’s Sledsmart program is successful, due in large part to those volunteers who deliver it to the community. Community Policing officers, teachers, community organizations, public health and safety committees and parents can all deliver the information.

The package is designed to be user friendly and able to be delivered by a wide range of individuals without specialized training.  The Society asks that individuals presenting the Sledsmart program register with the Society (its free) and to provide feedback and statistical information to the Society after completion presentations.

Resources included in the Facilitator package are presented on a CD and additional education and information resources are included.
