                                                          Swim to Survive

Bringing Swim to Survive® to your facility is as easy 1, 2, 3

For some Canadians, learning Swim to Survive skills is their first step to being safe around water.  Important life skills that will last a lifetime.

                                                           1.      Enjoy the programming flexibility and simplicity:

ü  Easy to market and provide.  Best suited to niche markets, there is wide variety of potential program users.              (i.e. schools, summer day camps, employers, youth groups: Army Cadets, Scouts/Guides, Boys and Girls Clubs)

ü  Meets customer’s limited budgets and/or timelines. Swim to Survive is flexible and simple to provide, making it easy to teach large groups safely.

ü  Step beyond the confines of a traditional “multi-level system”.  No matter what their skill level, participants start with the core Swim to Survive skills.  The stronger skilled swimmers quickly move on to explore optional Challenge Items.  Realistically everyone will be able to attempt the Canadian Swim to Survive Standard within three sessions.

                                                          2.      Your staff have what they need to get started:

ü  Provide staff orientation.  No specialized training or certification required - All of your instructors know how to teach the Swim to Survive skills and the optional Challenge Items included in Swim to Survive.  A one hour inservice that you can run yourself gives your staff the tools they need.  The Swim to Survive Activity Guideand lesson plans provide teaching strategies.

ü  Your lifejackets make great teaching tools. Each participant learns their Swim to Survive skills while wearing a lifejacket.  This keeps the whole group safe and gives each swimmer lots and lots of practice time.  When the person feels safe and ready, they can take the lifejacket off and take the Swim to Survive Challenge.

ü  Include get wet, hands on Water Smart activities to make this a powerful drowning prevention option.  Use the Water Smart Activities Guide and your own creativity to teach about making safe choices around water.

                                                          3.      Expect minimal administrative and program materials costs:

ü  Minimal administration is required.  Instructors use a worksheet to track participation. There are no progress cards to  complete - a certificate can be used instead.

ü  Easier to staff.  Your current instructor/lifeguard staff can teach Swim to Survive.  The program can handle higher student to instructor ratios, however you will still want to plan for a safe and effective instruction time.

ü  Everyone gets recognized - Reward your students.  The Society provides at no charge awareness ribbons and black line masters to print your own certificates.
